On 11 March 1976 the commander of the Beirut region, Brigadier Aziz al-Ahdab, read "Communiqué No. 1" on television demanding the resignation of Frangieh and the government, in a televised coup without real force; it deepened the army's split and paved the way for the shelling of Baabda.
