This historic split came after the mutiny of First Lieutenant Ahmad al-Khatib and the founding of the "Arab Army of Lebanon", and the siege and attack on the Christian towns of North Lebanon (such as Qoubaiyat and Andaket). In consequence some 200 Christian soldiers and officers from the Akkar area, serving in the eastern sector of Beirut, broke away and formed this brigade under Major Louis Khoury to defend their villages and families in the North and to take part in the fighting alongside the Lebanese Front.
