On 8 March 1985 a car bomb exploded near the house of Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah in Bir al-Abed, killing more than 80 people; Fadlallah survived, and the operation was attributed to a group trained by American intelligence with Saudi funding in reply to the 1983 bombings.
