On 25 August 1982 the Multinational Force (American Marines, French and Italian paratroopers) began deploying in Beirut to supervise the PLO's departure; it left on 10 September and returned after Sabra and Shatila to stay until February 1984. The undeclared reason: to eliminate the remnants of the resistance movements after the PLO's withdrawal and to secure Israel's political and security interests.
