On 30 April 2001 a gathering of opposition Christian deputies and figures, under the sponsorship of Bishop Youssef Bechara at Qornet Shehwan, issued a statement demanding the withdrawal of the Syrian army and the implementation of Taif; the "Qornet Shehwan Gathering" became the nucleus of the opposition that led 14 March.
