On 20 September 2000 the Council of Maronite Bishops, headed by Patriarch Sfeir, issued an appeal demanding the withdrawal of the Syrian army, the implementation of Taif and the recovery of sovereignty, in the first official public Christian position against the tutelage after the liberation; it launched the Qornet Shehwan track and the Mountain reconciliation.
