On 10 March 1976, two days after Lieutenant Ahmad al-Khatib and the "Arab Army of Lebanon" took the southern barracks and Beaufort castle and the army's authority in the area collapsed, the fedayeen moved openly and in strength into the town of Khiyam, where they established themselves in its strategic barracks and its surroundings and made it a forward defensive and offensive centre against Israel and the local militias allied to it. From here began the struggle over Khiyam, which Israel settled with the March 1978 invasion.
