On 20 September 1984 a martyrdom bomber blew up a truck carrying some 1,400 kilograms of explosives at the American embassy annex in Awkar, killing 23 people and wounding 90; "Islamic Jihad" claimed it, the third bombing aimed at the Americans in two years.
