On 17 May 1983 Lebanon and Israel signed, under American sponsorship, an agreement ending the state of war and tying the Israeli withdrawal to the withdrawal of Syria and the PLO; Syria and the opposition rejected it, and the uprising of 6 February 1984 brought it down.
