From 15 April 1985 Amal, the Progressive Socialist Party and the Communist Popular Guard attacked the Mourabitoun movement in West Beirut. The Mourabitoun, the Sunni Nasserist militia, were Yasser Arafat's closest allies in the capital, while Damascus and its allies, after the Multinational Force's withdrawal, sought to prevent the return of Arafat's supporters and to extend their control over West Beirut, paving the way for the War of the Camps that Amal began a month later. The Mourabitoun were defeated after a week of street fighting and their leader Ibrahim Koleilat was exiled; the last armed Sunni faction in the capital was finished.
