At the start of December 2005, eight months after the Syrian withdrawal, the remains of some 26 people were found in two mass graves on a hill near the former Syrian intelligence headquarters in Anjar, which had been a transit station for Lebanese detainees on the way to Syrian prisons. The townspeople said detainees who died in the intelligence prison were buried there, and SOLIDE demanded an international inquiry, while Damascus attributed the remains to civil war battles; Amnesty International criticised the manner of the excavation because it threatened the evidence.
