On 11 April 2005, as the Syrian withdrawal began, the committee of families of detainees in Syrian prisons, with the support of the association SOLIDE, set up an open-ended sit-in tent in front of the ESCWA building in Beirut, with a list that began at 280 names and grew past 600 people abducted from Lebanon to Syria since the 1970s; Damascus and Beirut had declared in 2000 that there were no longer any Lebanese detainees in Syria. The sit-in continued daily until it was suspended in December 2015, the tent kept as a symbol. After the fall of the Syrian regime in December 2024 Suheil Hamwi returned to Chekka after 33 years in Syrian prisons, Saydnaya among them, and only a handful of the 725 officially registered missing have surfaced.
