On 31 August 1978 Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions, Sheikh Mohammed Yaacoub and the journalist Abbas Badreddine, disappeared in Libya during an official visit to Gaddafi; Tripoli claimed they had left for Rome, and their fate remains unknown.
