●Israel withdraws to the security belt

PartiesIsrael / IDF

On 14 January 1985 the Israeli government approved a withdrawal in three stages under the pressure of resistance operations: Sidon and its surroundings up to the Zahrani were evacuated on 16 February, then Nabatieh, Jezzine, the West Bekaa and down to Tyre between 11 and 29 April, while it applied the "Iron Fist" policy in the villages (the massacres of Zrariyeh, Maarakeh and others). On 10 June 1985 the Israeli army completed its deployment along the edge of the "security belt", which took in about a tenth of Lebanon's area, and inside it handed the positions and crossings to the South Lebanon Army under Antoine Lahd, with the Khiyam prison and Israeli patrols; the belt remained until the liberation in May 2000.
