On 1 April 1981, as the Syrian forces tried to drive the Kataeb out of Zahle, the front lines in Beirut flared up with exchanges of artillery fire between East Beirut (the Lebanese Forces and the army) and West Beirut (the National Movement, the Palestinians and the deterrent forces). By the ceasefire of 3 April 89 had been killed and 275 wounded, and the fighting resumed nine hours later; by 2 June, 27 ceasefires had been declared.
