On 7 August 2006 Chiyah was targeted for the first time: heavy missiles fell on a building near the Hajjaj mosque that was sheltering displaced people from the suburbs and the South, and 56 were martyred according to al-Ahed, most of them children; in Ghazieh 15 were martyred in a building for the displaced and six in Ghassaniyeh. The resistance shelled the Northern Command headquarters in Safed, the eastern brigade's command in Kiryat Shmona and the Manara barracks. The same day the Arab foreign ministers met in Beirut and Siniora wept, and 217 Turkish deputies resigned from the friendship group with Israel.
