The opposition forces accused the army command of the time of sectarian shelling of civilian areas in the southern suburbs and West Beirut, especially after military units bulldozed houses in the Ouzai area. On that basis the Sixth Brigade (stationed at the Henri Chehab barracks and mostly Shia) refused to obey the military command's orders to enter an internal confrontation. The Sixth Brigade under Brigadier Lutfi Jaber sided with the opposition forces and took control of West Beirut, splitting the military institution.
