¤The dollar passes 100,000 lira

In March 2023 the dollar passed 100,000 lira and reached about 140,000 on 21 March before falling back and settling near 89,500 from the end of the month through the Banque du Liban's intervention; the lira had lost more than 98% of its value since 2019, and the official rate of 15,000 became symbolic. On 22 March Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called the dollar's jumps "10 to 40 thousand lira at a stroke" "illogical and without any basis", calling for an economic dialogue table and for Chinese investments that "could start at 12 billion dollars", holding all the political forces responsible and not the governor alone, and saying of the presidency that "the decision is first and foremost an internal matter".
