✍Bashir Gemayel begins secret visits to Israel

PartiesLebanese ForcesIsrael / IDFKataeb (Phalanges) Party

During 1976 Bachir Gemayel began a series of secret visits to Israel in which he met Peres and the army commanders to coordinate support in arms and training; the relationship shifted from supplying the Front's militias to a political partnership that paved the way for the 1982 alliance.

Note: Building a local armed force that takes its orders from a foreign army violates the principle of non-intervention enshrined in the UN Declaration on Friendly Relations (Resolution 2625, 1970) and the International Court of Justice's judgment in the Nicaragua case (1986), and dealing with the enemy is a crime under the Lebanese penal code and the Israel Boycott Law (1955). It is more dangerous to the state than direct occupation because it splits the army itself, as officers and men broke away from it, and creates an alternative local "legitimacy" that is hard to dismantle even after withdrawal.
