On 15 December 1983 some 2,500 Lebanese Forces fighters and 5,000 civilians were evacuated from Deir el-Qamar and Souk el-Gharb by sea to the Christian areas with Israeli facilitation after three months of siege; a new ceasefire was announced on 16 December and the airport reopened.
