The Battle of the Hotels began on 25 October 1975 between the National Movement and the Kataeb for control of the hotel district (the Holiday Inn, the Phoenicia, the Saint George) overlooking the port and Martyrs' Square; it went on in rounds until March 1976 and cut Beirut into East and West.
