On 7 April 1977 the Palestinian–Lebanese joint forces launched a surprise night attack on Khiyam from several axes, regaining full control of the town and the barracks within hours, and Haddad's militia withdrew towards Qlaiaa and Marjayoun under cover of Israeli artillery. The flags of the PLO and the National Movement were raised over the town's positions, and the struggle returned to the surrounding hills over the following months in a series of attacks and counter-attacks that were settled only by the invasion of March 1978.
