On 24 January 1948 Lebanon signed a monetary agreement with France that unpegged the lira from the deteriorating franc and guaranteed its cover in gold and hard currency; Syria rejected the agreement, so the two currencies parted ways, and the lira traded freely at about 3.2 to the dollar, a level it held almost unchanged until the 1970s.
