On 4 April 2004, after the American occupation closed the newspaper "al-Hawza" and arrested Muqtada al-Sadr's aide, the Mahdi Army rose up in Najaf, Kufa, Sadr City, Kut and Basra, in step with the first battle of Fallujah; the confrontations went on until the June truce.
