On 31 October 2016 parliament elected Michel Aoun president after a vacancy of two and a half years, in a settlement that brought Hariri and Geagea together with Hezbollah. Two days earlier Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah had spoken in Baalbek of "a major development in the presidential file", hoping for "a new term, a new government and a new stage in the country".
