On 20 July 1960 President Fouad Chehab submitted his resignation to the new parliament in protest at the obstruction of reform and the interference of the traditional leaders; parliament unanimously rejected the resignation and his supporters demonstrated, so he withdrew it two days later and stayed until the end of his term in 1964.
