On 29 August 2003 Sayyed Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim, leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, was killed with some 90 people by a car bomb outside the shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf; the bombing was attributed to Zarqawi's group. At his memorial in the southern suburbs on 1 September Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said the bombing was a complex operation requiring a capable organisation and pointed to Saddam Hussein's network without ruling out an Israeli role, warning against sectarian accusation: "The Americans do not want a state in Iraq" and "America has no future in Iraq."
