On 1 January 1999 Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah presented the harvest of 1998: 1,352 operations against 904 in 1997, some ninety dead and 308 wounded for the enemy and its collaborators by their own admission, 39 martyrs for the resistance, 35 of them from the Islamic Resistance, and Brigades that had received more than two thousand applications. He quoted the chief of staff Mofaz, "we are not able to withdraw without guarantees, nor to widen the belt, nor to launch a new war", noted that 40% of Israelis now favoured unilateral withdrawal "and the proportion will rise with every soldier", and that Israel "fears a regional war more than you do"; he read the bombing of Iraq and Clinton's visit to Gaza as proof that America "is not an honest judge", and contrasted "Arafat begging from Netanyahu" with a Lebanon that says "no" to Jezzine first and to a conditional 425. On the new presidential term he said the party had withheld confidence from the Hoss government "for transparency" but "is not in the position of opposition" and extends its hand, asking for a ministerial committee to support the resistance, for the file of the prisoners and the people of the strip, and that the austerity policy not reach the deprived areas.
