After eight years of war the lira had held near 3–5 to the dollar thanks to the reserves and remittances; with the uprising of 6 February 1984, the collapse of the state's authority and the budget deficit, the slide began: about 9 lira at the end of 1984, 18 at the end of 1985, and 87 at the end of 1986.
