On 2 November 2001 the American administration placed Hezbollah on the list under Executive Order 13224 for freezing "terrorist" funds after 11 September, and asked Beirut to freeze its assets; the government, President Lahoud and parliament refused, distinguishing resistance from terrorism, and Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah answered on Martyr's Day that the target was "Lebanon's strength: the resistance, unity, and coordination with Syria and Iran".
