In June 1982, in protest at Nabih Berri's joining the National Salvation Committee alongside Bachir Gemayel and his acceptance of American mediation, the movement's deputy leader and spokesman Hussein al-Musawi broke away, accused Berri of treason, and founded "Islamic Amal" in Baalbek with the support of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard; its fighters numbered about a thousand, and it later merged into Hezbollah.
