On the morning of 14 August 2006, the thirty-fourth day, the war stopped and the people of the South began returning at once despite the blockade and the continued presence of Israeli soldiers on the edges of the villages, in a scene that recalled the liberation of 2000; at dawn Israel committed a massacre in Brital (seven martyrs) and bombed a van in Jamaliyeh (six). Ahmadinejad and the Emir of Qatar congratulated Lahoud, Berri called on the displaced to return immediately, and Olmert admitted before the Knesset to "shortcomings in the management of the war", taking "full responsibility" for not achieving the aims, while Bush blamed Hezbollah, Iran and Syria, and Assad said "Hezbollah has won".
