On 15 February 2005, on an Ashura night the day after Hariri's assassination, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called the assassination "a great trap set for Lebanon, for the Lebanese people, for Syria and for the nation", refusing to claim knowledge of the truth before the investigation and warning: "every word, every accusation, every position and every provocation may have grave consequences", since Israel is the first beneficiary of any strife. He called for a serious investigation, for no hostility to Syria, and for dialogue between the Ain el-Tineh and Bristol gatherings: "We must not be the ones who go and strike at security and stability in Lebanon."
