At dawn on 30 July 2006 Israeli aircraft bombed a building sheltering displaced families in Qana; 54 were martyred, most of them women and children. The massacre provoked worldwide anger and forced Israel to suspend its raids for 48 hours, and the name of Qana returned as a symbol after the 1996 massacre in the same town.
