On the evening of 8 May 2008, minutes after Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's press conference, street fighting broke out on Corniche al-Mazraa and then in the mixed neighbourhoods; the fighters of Hezbollah, Amal and the SSNP overran the positions of the government's supporters in West Beirut, and Jumblatt's house in Clemenceau was surrounded, while the army decided not to intervene.
