From 31 December 1999 to 5 January 2000 the army fought battles in the Dinniyeh highlands against a Salafi group led by Bassam Kanj (Abu Aisha) that tried to set up an "emirate"; 11 soldiers and some 25 gunmen were killed, and it was the first confrontation with the jihadist current.
